In License to Wed, Sadie and Ben are deeply in love and planning to get married. However, Sadie dreams of having her wedding at their family church, St. Augustine's, in spite of Ben's suggestion of a Caribbean destination wedding. When they meet with the pastor of the church, Rev. Frank, they discover that the only available date for their wedding is just three weeks away. Frank insists that they must go through his unconventional marriage preparation course before he will agree to marry them.

The course includes writing their own vows and embracing chastity, but it quickly becomes evident that Frank has some unorthodox methods. He bugs their apartment, instigates arguments between the couple, tasks them with taking care of robot twins, and tries to create friction between Ben and Sadie's family. All of this begins to raise doubts in Sadie's mind about their relationship.

Desperate to prove himself and keep Sadie's heart, Ben starts looking for dirt on Frank in an attempt to undermine his authority. Will Ben's efforts succeed, or will Frank's methods ultimately drive a wedge between Sadie and Ben?
